Local Presidents/VPs/H&S Co-Chairs/RERC Co-Chairs:

On Sunday, November 4th, 2018, I was awarded with what I think is the highest honor in this Division, and that was to be nominated and elected to the MERC Committee.  With that, it is with great difficulty that I advise you of my resignation from MERC.

I prefer to not go into detail, however, but due to a family member’s prolonged illness, I cannot continue with any effectiveness on MERC.  My decision to resign has been weighing heavily on my mind since early December, 2020 and has not been made easily.  My love and passion has always been trying to advance the interests of the Corrections Division.  However, with MERC elections postponed indefinitely, I simply cannot maintain focus on what is important to me at this point.

MERC and PJOHSC members were advised of this earlier this week.  With that, effective Monday February 22nd, 2021, Chad Oldfield will assume the role of MERC co-chair, Janet Laverty will assume the role of MERC Vice-Chair, and, I will assume the role of Member.  My role as a Member will remain until April 4th, 2021 – meaning my resignation will take effect on that date.  Peter Figliola has accepted a MERC member position and will commence his role on April 5th, 2021.  This month-long period will give both Chad and Janet an opportunity to transition to their new roles. On April 5th, 2021 I will return to the floor as Correctional Officer in full duty.

I am proud to have been part of a MERC Committee and Bargaining Team that saw our first, very positive, stand-alone Corrections collective agreement, the announcement of over 500 new Full-Time Positions,  new infrastructure announcements, our own annual #CorrectionsCares event, a host of positive developments such as drug loos, sally-port meal hatches, and ion scanners.

I have full confidence in the current MERC Committee and our Division in that they, and we, will continue to evolve and aspire to greatness.

Thanks,

In Solidarity
